William Gates is a character in Mafia: Definitive Edition.
History[]
Gates is the son of a wealthy distillery owner from Kentucky, who continued to operate his business in defiance of Prohibition and sold whiskey to cities across the United States. His son decided to move operations north to Lost Heaven, where the demand for quality liquor was especially high.
Gates initially sold his product to the Morello family; unfortunately, when Don Morello realized that Gates was just a small-timer with no actual gang connections to back him up, he refused to pay the agreed-upon price and punched Gates in the nose when he made a fuss. A humiliated Gates was drowning his sorrows at the Blue Tropics when he made the acquaintance of Paulie Lombardo. Paulie paid for his drinks and convinced Gates that he ought to be doing business with the Salieri family instead.
The two men work out a plan: to keep Morello from learning about their scheme, Paulie suggests that Gates and his crew fake a holdup while delivering their next shipment, thus allowing Gates to slip away from Lost Heaven and convince his father that Morello couldn't be trusted. The exchange is set to take place at a parking garage in the Downtown area that Paulie often uses for deals.
Tommy, Paulie, Sam, Carlo, and their associate Little Bill arrive the next day for the "holdup". Just as they are about to conclude the deal, a large Morello hit squad suddenly drives up and starts firing; Gates' men are killed while Gates himself gets hit in the chest. However, he manages to keep from passing out, and Little Bill stays behind to protect him until he can be rescued.
Sam and Carlo successfully drive the truck back to Salieri's warehouse with Tommy and Paulie defending them from armed pursuers. The Salieri family ultimately makes a large profit from selling the whiskey, assuring Gates that he will be their preferred supplier from now on.
