The Trench 1938 Drum is a weapon in Mafia III.

Description[]

It's got the largest magazine among all SMGs. Consider that a bigger margin for error when pulling the trigger.

Performance[]

The Trench 1938 Drum handles very similarly to its base game counterpart, the Trench 1938, However there are multiple gameplay differences that differentiate it from its stick magazine brother. The Trench Drum has a large increase in magazine size and ammo storage from the standard Trench, increasing the magazine size from 30 to 50 rounds and increasing the ammo reserve from 60 to 100 rounds, making it not only the highest capacity SMG in the game, but also the weapon with the second highest capacity stat in the game, only being beaten by the Hartmann 7.62mm with its monstrous 100 round belt.

This increases the weapons effectiveness with crowd control and its longevity in firefights as you can fire for longer without needing to reload or restock ammo as often as any other SMG. It also has an advantage over the Hartman 7.62mm, of not hindering your movement speed, and allowing the player to run. This makes avoiding enemy gunfire and thrown explosives easier. It also does slightly higher damage than the regular Trench 1938, doing 17% damage instead of 14% damage.

Combine this with the fact that it is accessible for free as soon as the Arms Dealer is available (if the player has the requisite DLC) and you have a weapon that is very strong in dealing with large groups of enemies in the early to mid-game, however this does not come without its drawbacks. It is far less stable than its' stick magazine counterpart, with a major penalty to its stability rating. While this has an unnoticeable effect on close range combat and a controllable effect on middle range combat, this makes long range combat much more of a hassle than both its base game counterpart and most of the other SMG's. Although upgrades can somewhat rectify this issue (putting the stability stat on par with the Trench 38's base stability), it is still not advisable to use it (or any SMG for that matter) at longer ranges, as rifles are far more well suited for that use.

Trivia[]

  • The weapon is more different from the stock Trench 1938 than one might assume. Not only does it have a higher magazine capacity, but it does more damage. It is however, also significantly less accurate at medium range.
  • It does damage comparable to the Deutsche M11B, but is obtainable far earlier in the game. It is only 1% lower in damage than the M11B.
  • The weapon icon in the Arms Dealer mobile store and the weapons wheel depicts it with a flat foregrip that makes it look like a Thompson M1 equipped with a drum magazine. However, the in-game model makes it clear that the weapon is a Thompson M1928, with an accurate foregrip.
