The Tommy Gun is a weapon in Mafia: Definitive Edition.
Specifications[]
The weapon holds 50 rounds, and the player can carry an additional 100, for a total of 150 rounds. It occupies the two-handed weapons slot in the weapons wheel. Some Tommy Guns have their stocks removed or use stick magazines (this does not affect usage, however).
Availability[]
The weapon becomes available in Vincenzo's Armory from the beginning of "You Lucky Bastard" onward. In Free Ride, it becomes available after completing "Better Get Used to It".
Appearances[]
Mafia: DE[]
- Sam Trapani carries a Tommy Gun in missions such as Crème de la Crème and A Trip to the Country, and also uses one in his showdown with Tommy during The Death of Art.
- Punks, gangsters, Police Officers, police detectives, Federal agents, and bodyguards all use the Tommy Gun.
- Tommy uses a Tommy Gun to both fend off pursuing cops and destroy the Bulworth Sentry truck sent after him, Sam, and Paulie towards the end of A Trip to the Country. Both of Paulie's slain men also use Tommy Guns.
- Several of the Morello gangsters sent to kill Don Salieri at Pepe's Restaurant during Bon Appétit use Tommy Guns.
- One of the bootleggers accompanying William Gates during Great Deal has a Tommy Gun.
- Tommy and Paulie both use Tommy Guns during Moonlighting, as opposed to the original game where Paulie only carried a Semi-Auto Pistol while carrying out the heist.
- Tommy Guns will be used by Morello family hit squads if Tommy gets ambushed while in Free Roam.
- A famous scene from You Lucky Bastard in the original Mafia, where Paulie tries to kill Sergio Morello only to realize he loaded his Tommy Gun with an empty magazine is altered in Definitive Edition; Paulie instead misses his opportunity to kill Sergio because Tommy shoves him to keep an innocent waitress from being killed in the crossfire.
- Seized Tommy Guns can be seen in the Federal Customs Impound during Just for Relaxation.
Real World[]
The Tommy Gun is based on the Thompson 1928 submachine gun, one of the most iconic weapons in history and a favorite of both lawmen and criminals throughout the Prohibition era on account of its reasonably light frame and unmatched rate of fire.

Trivia[]
- The Tommy Gun is Sam Trapani's favorite weapon, as he carries it in the artwork of Salieri Crime Family and his cigarette card.
- Vincenzo refers to the Tommy Gun as a "chopper", while graffiti in the Lost Heaven County Prison describes squatters falling asleep to the "lullaby of the typewriter". "Chopper" and "typewriter" were period-accurate slang terms used to describe Thompsons.
