The Prologue is the opening cutscene in Mafia: Definitive Edition.
Overview[]
The scene introduces players to protagonist Tommy Angelo as he first meets with Detective Norman and begins telling his story.
Narrative[]
The game opens on Lost Heaven in 1938 as Detective Norman steps off the elevated train and makes his way to the bar where he's been called to meet with Tommy, who says he has a proposition for him. The detective makes it clear from the start that if Tommy is looking for someone to bribe, he's called the wrong cop. This is fine by Tommy, who explains that he can't even afford the cup of coffee he's drinking, but he has plenty to trade.
As the two talk, it is learned that Detective Norman was given the Morello murder case right after he arrived from Empire Bay three years earlier. The case has gone cold, and Tommy offers to help the detective with information on the case in exchange for protection for his wife and daughter.
Tommy seems reluctant to talk at first, but Detective Norman insists that he can't offer anything until he hears what Tommy has to say. Judging by the fact that Tommy obviously hasn't slept in days, Norman figures there must be someone powerful after him, and they're not giving up until Tommy ends up in the river.
Knowing that Tommy wouldn't make it five steps out the door without his help, Norman offers to listen to Tommy's story, reminding Tommy that doing so is the only shot he has of living long enough to walk his daughter down the aisle one day at her wedding.
Trivia[]
- In the original game, it was Tommy Angelo who arrived to the bar and not the other way around as depicted in Mafia: Definitive Edition.
