"Shit, now where'd I put my keys?"
Leon's last words

Leon is a minor character in Mafia II.

History[]

Background[]

Leon is one of the bartenders at The Lone Star in 1951.

Death[]

On the night of June 15, 1951, Joe Barbaro is drinking heavily at the Lone Star to cope with the grief of Marty Santorelli's murder that occurred earlier that day, during the hectic assassination of Don Clemente. Joe becomes extremely drunk and belligerent as a result. Leon calls Vito Scaletta, the ringing of his phone waking him up that night. Leon asks if it's Vito, and Vito asks who's asking. Leon tells Vito who he is, and that Joe gave him his number, and then tells him about the situation with Joe at the bar. Leon explains that Joe has been drinking whiskey all night long and that he has become out of control, and nobody who works at the bar can reason with him.

Joe pulled out a 1911 Semi and started waving it around while sulking about Marty's death, which scared away all of the bar's customers, when plenty were there an hour prior to the disturbance. Leon asks Vito to come down to the Lone Star and talk some sense into Joe and drive him home. Vito agrees, and tells Leon to lock the bar up until he gets there. Vito also tells him to cut Joe off, to which Leon says he'll try but Joe won't be down with that, and then Vito threatens Leon to do so or else. Leon agrees to Vito's terms, and implores him to come to the Lone Star.

Vito drives to the bar and knocks on the door, and Leon lets him in. Vito finds Joe in an erratic drunken state appearing disheveled, waving his gun around still with a bottle of whiskey in front of him. Leon says he tried to cut Joe off, but that Joe was going to shoot him if he did so. Vito pulls up a chair and attempts to talk some sense into his drunk and grief-stricken friend, pointing out the error in his conduct, and at first seeming to slightly calm Joe after asking him to finish his drink and leave. However, Joe's severely intoxicated state proves unpredictable still, and disaster strikes.

In a fit of drunken grief and anger over Marty's murder, Joe yells twice that it never should've happened, and slams his hand holding the gun on the table. While Leon is retrieving his keys to close the bar for the night and go home, Joe accidentally discharges the gun, and the bullet hits Leon in the side of his ribs in multiple vital areas, killing him almost instantly. Seeing this unnecessary accidental death of an innocent man enrages and disturbs Vito, who berates Joe for his deadly drunken outburst and angrily asks him "What the fuck is wrong with you?!". Joe in his drunken stupor dismisses the seriousness of the situation at first, saying "I was just..", to which Vito interrupts having none of it, telling Joe to shut his mouth and demanding that he come outside. Vito drags Leon's body to the trunk of his own car that's parked out back, and puts it in the trunk. Joe gets in the passenger seat. Vito drives Joe home, and as some dark humor to lighten the grim situation, Vito tells Joe to try not to shoot anybody on the way to the front door. Joe attempts to apologize, but Vito simply tells him to call him tomorrow.

To cover up the accidental killing of a civilian and protect Joe, Vito drives the car with Leon's corpse in the trunk to Bruski's Scrapyard, and he crushes the car in Mike's car crusher, destroying most of the evidence of the manslaughter.

Trivia[]

  • Leon only appears working at the Lone Star in Room Service, at any other time there will be a generic NPC working there. It makes no difference if you visit the bar before or after his accidental death.
  • Legally, Leon's death would be considered involuntary manslaughter.
  • If the player attempts to dispose of the car containing Leon's remains by driving it into water, they will fail the mission and have to restart from a checkpoint, the failure message saying the body wasn't disposed of properly. You will get the same mission failure for destroying the car with weapons.
  • Disposing of the body at the junkyard will earn the player the achievement Hey Joe.
