"The friendship between the Corleone Hotel and the Morello family will be long, and fruitful!"
Howard Davis

Howard Davis is a minor character in Mafia: Definitive Edition.

History[]

Background[]

Howard Davis is the manager of the Corleone Hotel, one of the oldest businesses in Lost Heaven. Behind his facade of a well-dressed and professional businessman, however, Davis is a cold-hearted pimp who uses the hotel as a front for the city's most profitable brothel, maintaining a heavy security presence, ensuring that certain rooms are always occupied by his girls, and keeping a separate check-in log to record clients and their payments.

Death[]

For many years, the Corleone, despite being located in the Downtown district that made up part of the Morello family's territory, did business only with the rival Salieri family. Then, in 1932, Davis formally severed his ties with the Salieri family, establishing a new relationship with Don Morello.

Don Salieri did not take this betrayal lightly. Not only had Davis made the Salieri family look weak, but he had also cut off a major source of revenue that the struggling family desperately needed. Moreover, control of the hotel gave Morello leverage over the influential patrons who relied on its services as well as information he could use against the family. As if to confirm this, Frank Colletti soon discovered that a Corleone prostitute, Michelle, had compromised several business deals by sharing gossip she had learned from family caporegime Sam Trapani.

Salieri decided that something had to be done; Davis needed to pay for his actions and Morello couldn't be allowed to have control of the Corleone. Soldato Tommy Angelo was instructed to visit the hotel posing as a guest, kill Davis, steal all incriminating documents and money from his office, plant a bomb so the Corleone would have to be closed down, and deal with Michelle. Tommy did as he was ordered and found Davis in the hotel lounge as he gave a speech toasting Don Morello to a private gathering of girls, hotel security men, and various guests. Tommy walked up as if to introduce himself, informed Davis that "Don Salieri sends his regards", and shot him in the face with a concealed pistol.

Trivia[]

  • The reason behind Davis's defection was never expressly stated in the game. The most like reason is that Morello offered him a better deal such as cheaper protection or a bigger cut in profits. Another possibility could have been that Davis would have been free to use the Corleone to keep his girls strung out on drugs and/or permit drug trafficking, which Morello openly had no qualms about.
  • A document in Davis's office includes a list of powerful men who frequent the Corleone. One of the names is the chief detective of the Lost Heaven Police Department's Prohibition Bureau, which includes the Lost Heaven Border Patrol that Morello later uses to ambush the Salieri family in "A Trip to the Country".
  • Davis seems to be partially inspired by the character of Moe Greene in The Godfather, as he is a wealthy associate of a powerful crime family who manages a profitable criminal enterprise that the family has invested heavily in. Davis also chooses to betray the family in favor of their rivals and is then murdered by being shot in the face by a lone gunman.
