"Says in the paper, he's gonna be remembered for fightin' to pass the 19th Amendment. Put his whole career on the line for it."
Sarah Angelo

Hank Turnbull is a character in Mafia: Definitive Edition.

History[]

Turnbull is a corrupt Congressman who represented Illinois' 27th District, entering congress in 1912, and remained in office for twenty years. One of his proudest accomplishments as congressman was voting for the passage of the 19th Amendment that granted suffrage to American women. He retired from Congress when he announced that he would not defend his seat in the 1932 elections.

Following the 1935 "Birthday Massacre" that resulted in the death of Roberto Ghillotti, a close friend of Turnbull's, the city of Lost Heaven descended into brutal gang warfare and Turnbull, whether motivated by opportunity or because he genuinely felt that something had to be done and announced he was throwing his hat in the ring for the 1938 gubernatorial election. His primary campaign argument was that "gangsterism" needed to be stopped, and that as governor he would do everything in his power to wipe out the mobs.

This didn't sit well with Don Salieri, who considered Turnbull a "hypocrite" since he had benefitted from the same corruption that he was now railing against, as well as that Salieri considered the campaign a legitimate threat to his organization. Aware that his campaign was gaining in popularity and that many others were feeling emboldened to speak out against him, the Don decided that a message had to be sent. He and his caporegime Vincenzo Ricci tasked their best triggerman, Tommy Angelo, with assassinating Turnbull.

On July 15, 1938, Turnbull was scheduled to deliver a public address at Lost Heaven's Robinson Park to kick off his campaign. Tommy accessed the old Lost Heaven County Prison, found a rifle planted by Vincenzo's associate Little Tony, and shot Turnbull dead as he spoke. Though the city mourned his death, the message was clear, and soon enough all public criticism of Don Salieri faded away.

Trivia[]

  • Turnbull's last name may be a reference to a minor character in The Godfather Part II who briefly appeared as the aide to a corrupt Congressman on Michael Corleone's payroll.
  • In a cutscene that ends the mission, Sarah Angelo is seen reading Turnbull's obituary in the morning paper. Possibly suspecting her husband's role in his death on Salieri's orders, she tells him never to "do anything you don't wanna be remembered for".
  • Tommy mentions that Turnbull spent more money on prostitutes than Sam and Paulie combined, making clear his hypocrisy. This also means Turnbull was unfaithful to his wife.
