"You know anybody else driving a rare import in this part of town, Joey?"
Don Morello

Don Marcu Morello is the secondary antagonist of Mafia: Definitive Edition.

History[]

Don Morello is the boss and founder of the Morello Crime Family. He was a caporegime of the Peppone family and a good friend of Don Salieri during Peppone's rule. In 1921, after Peppone was assassinated, Salieri and Morello agree to split Lost Heaven between them.

Both families prosper greatly from the gold rush of Prohibition, but while Salieri cultivates a reputation as an honest and hardworking "businessman" who takes care of his friends and ensures that no overt criminality disrupts the lives of the residents of Little Italy, Morello goes the opposite way as he asserts his dominance over North Park.

As Tommy Angelo explains it to Detective Norman, Morello was a violent, greedy, and generally unpleasant man who would do anything to make money no matter the consequences. Most people were afraid of him and did their best to avoid him. Yet despite his reputation, Morello's wealth bought him plenty of friends. Most of Lost Heaven's politicians, elected officials, and city employees were in his pocket, and he effectively controlled the police force, making him and his businesses untouchable by the law.

In the mid-1930s, Morello ramps up his efforts to destroy the Salieri family and take complete control of Lost Heaven, culminating in an attempt to have Don Salieri killed in public. The hit fails, and the Salieri and Morello families go to war. Don Salieri's careful planning slowly whittles down Morello's resources and results in the death of his younger brother Sergio, and Morello himself is compelled to go into hiding.

In 1935, Morello is forced to attend a charity gala organized by his family in a bid to shore up his weakening support among Lost Heaven's corrupt political elite. Don Salieri is informed of this, and has Tommy, Sam Trapani, and Paulie Lombardo ambush Morello as he's leaving the event. Morello, protected by an escort of police cruisers, speeds towards the airport and attempts to board a private plane to fly out of state. The plane is damaged after Sam shoots out one of the engines, and crashes on a farm just outside the city.

By the time Salieri's crew arrives, Morello is crawling away from the wreckage, badly bruised and cut-up, his breathing shallow and rushed. Tommy calmly walks up and sprays Don Morello with gunfire from a Tommy Gun, finishing him off. The remnants of the Morello family, knowing that the war is over, then agree to fold themselves into the Salieri family.

Trivia[]

  • According to Morello, he and Salieri orchestrated the murder of Peppone and have been fighting each other ever since, "just not out in the open".
  • Morello is likely inspired by Prohibition-era gangsters such as "Bloody" Angelo Genna, Joe Aiello, Dean O'Banion, and Joe "The Boss" Masseria, all of whom were murdered by their rivals. His overall appearance also has some similarities to Virgil "The Turk" Sollozzo from The Godfather (which isn't surprising since both men are heroin dealers).
  • Morello is painted by Don Salieri as having a temper so bad, it "burns out his brain" when he gets angry and causes him to make foolish decisions.
  • Morello often wears a distinctive white suit. Don Salieri starts wearing an identical outfit after his death to signify the "power" he has taken from his deceased rival.
  • It is unclear how much control Morello actually exercises over his family given that his brother Sergio and the unnamed consigliere handle most of the hard decisions. The fact that Morello's empire falls apart quickly after Sergio's death seems to confirm this.
