Carlo is a supporting character in Mafia: Definitive Edition.

History[]

A veteran soldato in the Salieri family, Carlo works as the driver and bodyguard for Don Salieri, a prestigious assignment that he largely earned due to his late father having been close with the Don during the early days of the family. However, it is made clear during several missions that Carlo loathes being a driver on account of how tedious it is, abuses drugs since he has far too much free time and bears some anger towards the Don for not giving him a more important job.

Carlo does finally get a chance to actually participate in family business in 1933 when the Don sends him to accompany the crew tasked with collecting a shipment of Kentucky whiskey from William Gates. When the crew is ambushed by gunmen from the Morello family, he helps Sam drive the overloaded truck back to the safety of the Don's warehouse.

In 1935, Carlo calls in sick on the day Don Salieri plans to visit Pepe's Restaurant for lunch. Tommy Angelo drives him instead, but the visit is ruined when a crew of Morello button men attempt a hit on the Don. With Tommy's help, the assassins are killed, but the restaurant is gutted by fire and many innocent people are killed in the crossfire.

Don Salieri deduces that only Carlo could have known exactly where he'd be and surmises that Morello has flipped him. Tommy chimes in, pointing out several instances, such as the farm, where it seems Morello knew in advance what the family was planning. Enraged that Carlo would betray him after all he's done on his behalf, the Don has Tommy take him to Carlo's flophouse in Holbrook so he can personally exact revenge.

Salieri insists on entering first despite Tommy's wishes, saying he wants his face to be the last thing Carlo ever sees. Upon kicking in the door to Carlo's apartment, Tommy sends Carlo's girlfriend away while the Don starts beating him. The out-of-shape Don stops to catch his breath, and Carlo takes the chance to climb out the window and try to escape. Tommy chases Carlo and fatally shoots him as he tries to climb a ladder. Salieri approaches the dying Carlo, noticing him clinging to life on the ground. He then stomps and kicks Carlo several times, honoring his promise that Carlo would have a "closed casket" funeral.

Don Morello loses his temper and kills a dock worker he was beating up after being informed by his brother Sergio that Salieri is still alive, and after inquiring about Carlo's fate, Sergio tells him that Carlo was found with his head smashed in "like a fucking watermelon". Don Morello realizes that Don Salieri must've figured out that Carlo was the rat he was using to gather information on the Salieri family, but otherwise seems completely unbothered by his death.

Trivia[]

  • Carlo is primarily based on two characters from The Godfather. His name is taken from Carlo Rizzi, the brother-in-law of Michael Corleone who betrays Michael's brother Sonny (resulting in his death), and his job as Don Salieri's driver is taken from Paulie Gatto, a soldier in the Corleone family who works as Don Corleone's personal driver on the day he is nearly killed by assassins sent by Virgil "The Turk" Sollozzo.
