Ellis would not have been a good leader for the black gang. He lets his emotions get the better of him.

Like when he said to go around the neighborhood and kill any member of the Haitian gang.

Even with being taught by Sammy upon taking over; the same way Vito was teaching Michael in the Godfather; I think Ellis would be the end of the gang. Lincoln would have been the preferred new leader.
